Unknown to most of mankind, there exists a subtle and intangible world beyond the understanding of our five senses, mind and intellect. This world goes by a number of names such as the subtle-world, subtle-dimension, spirit world, spiritual realm or spiritual dimension. It includes the world of angels, ghosts, Heaven (Swarga), Hell (Pātāl) etc. The tangible or known world that most of us are familiar with is very small as compared to the subtle intangible world. In fact the extent of the known world as compared to the subtle-world is in the ratio of one is to infinity. This subtle-world hugely influences our life. It is also one of the more common spiritual factors that affects almost all of humanity in some form or the other. Sometimes when people see a smiling and healthy child, they unknowingly have some desire-related thoughts. As these thoughts are Raja-Tama predominant, the child gets afflicted adversely as their subtle-body is very sensitive.

Another example is when a female wears provocative clothing. The individuals of the opposite sex may have desirous thoughts about her. When these thoughts are generated in the mind, they increase the Raja-Tama in the individual having the desirous thoughts and affect the concerned female, as well as others in the environment.

Demonic possession is believed to be the process by which individuals are possessed by malevolent preternatural beings, commonly referred to as demons or devils. Obsessions and possessions of the devil are placed in the rank of apparitions of the evil spirit among humans. It is obsession when the demon acts externally against the person whom it besets, and possession when he acts internally, agitates them, excites their ill humor, makes them utter blasphemy, speak tongues they have never learned, discovers to them unknown secrets, and inspires them with the knowledge of the obscurest things in philosophy or theology.
